The biggest problem facing humanity's collective actions are that we don't seem to have decent perspectives on what is important and what is not.
Once a movement is started, it continues on until all the good it can accomplish has been, and instead of stopping right then and there, the movement goes on living and pushing for destructive advancement of its cause. Like Frankenstein, the movement wants to grow and live.
The environmental movement is pushing into that territory today. Like all such movements, it uses good old fear to push an increasingly toxic agenda... one that has objectives that are less and less qunatifiable WRT public health and safety and more and more abusive to the entire concept of private property, which is the basis of rich societies throughout the history of mankind.
However, I have talked ad nauseum about the environmental meme on this blog in past postings. Let's try another similar meme... "drunk driving". I was in college when Mothers Against Drunk Driving began their assault. During my first three years of college, drunk driving was equivalent of a bad speeding ticket. Half the people I knew then had at least one. Thankfully, I was not (and am not) part of that select fraternity, although I have driven drunk more times than I care to admit. And I am willing to admit a lot.
Had MAAD stopped when it accomplished making drunk driving a serious offence, I might leave this whole topic alone. I am not a purist, and clearly drunk driving IS a bad idea. But MAAD has gone on and on and on since those heady days in the early 1980's and today people that have never had an accident are spending life behind bars for getting four DWIs. Now if DWI meant "Stupidly Drunk Driving", real slurring, stumbling, reality cop show stupid drunk, I would tend to give this a pass as well. But is doesn't.
Here are the facts. The AVERAGE blood alcohol level of drunk drivers involved in crashes is 0.24. DWI has been downward progressed to 0.08 in most places today. Essentially two glasses of wine in an hour, and one per hour thereafter for most people. In other words, Not Drunk. Hell our parents did this before 3:30 and still were on time to pick kids up in carpool, although they are loathe to admit it today.
There isn't any relationship between accidents and the 0.08 to 1.0 driver. In fact, with these increasingly restrictive laws, the accident rate has gone UP since these were mandated!
MAAD, in its maad quest for continuing relevance, has created a system of drinking and driving laws that go far beyond what the constitution suggests, and the courts uphold as reasonable for OTHER crimes like, say, murder. Only with DWI am I compelled to testify against myself. If I refuse, I will be automatically penalized by being reported to the DPS and losing my license for 180 days, WITHOUT a finding of guilt. Interestingly, there IS one group of residents that DON'T get reported to the DPS... undocumented residents. I resist the term "undocumented worker" because I really can't tell who works and who doesn't. Do Salvadoran gang bangers work? I guess dealing drugs is work.
In any case, if you don't have a license, you will be reported, if you are here on an undocumented basis, or "illegally" as some insensitively proclaim (and as the Mexican authorities told me in no uncertain terms was my status while I was residing in their country during one summer teaching scuba diving in college), no worries. Their rights are need more special attention than ours. To top all of this off, and to reiterate a previous comment, accident rates, the thing we were supposed to be solving, have been entirely unaffected by this crazy twisting of the laws to strip away our so-called rights. That's right... the whole thing HAS NOT WORKED!
We spent a lot our precious liberty nickels buying NOTHING!
I agree I am an anachronism. I look back with fond memories to having cases of beer on ice and firearms in my car as a sped down state highways. That was freedom! The days when a frosty bottle of beer in my right hand and a steering wheel in my left was not defacto evidence of drunkenness any more than the rifle in the gun rack behind my head was not defacto evidence that I was a crazed killer.
It all reminds me of a joke I just heard. A couple lived on a lake, and the husband had been fishing all day and had just returned home. The wife decided to take the boat out on the lake, find a shady spot, and read a book. She was doing just so when a fish and game warden pulled his boat up next to hers.
"This is a restricted fishing area, ma'am", he said.
"That's alright, I'm not fishing. I am reading a book", she replied.
"But you have all the equipment to fish with, and there is nothing stopping you from dropping a line into the water once I leave. I am going to have to write you up for fishing in a restricted area", stated the Game Warden.
"That's fine, son", she replied, "Then I am going to have to report you to the police and your superiors for sexual harassment and rape".
"But I haven't done anything!" sputtered the Warden.
"Yes, but you have all the equipment and there is nothing stopping you from using it according to your theory of law enforcement..." she said.
There you have it. The problem in a nutshell. The action is the crime, not the possession of the accoutrements.
I'll pop a cold one and toast my progressive friends for worrying so much about my life as I drive from South Texas this fall weekend!
