Yay! The culmination of the New Deal and the Great Society are upon us, now in technicolor!
Our politicians have now indebted us to the tune of more than the world's GDP! Wow! We always do things bigger in America!
They do it because we, the citizens, demand that they do it. Give is Security. Give us crap that we didn't work for or earn. Of course, these sleazy lackies of of ours just borrow to give it to us to keep our whiny asses quiet.
They have now given us more than the output of all of Earth's economies.
The Greatest Generation yields to... Us. Yurck.
Based on these debt levels, one can predict that there will soon be a huge consensus within government in support of a program that used to earn the ire of Senator William Proxmire: SETI, aka the search for extraterrestrial life. Why would this subject suddenly become the darling of everyone from the Treasury to the DOD? Simple, when we find ET's home worlds, we can parlay their mere existence into a mortal threat in order to justify er ah, astronomically ...increased defense budgets. Simultaneously, we will contact them and borrow the money from them to pay for it.
But this is not my idea... I read about it here:

The Project for the New American Galaxy is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for our Spiral Arm and for the whole Galaxy; and that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy, googleplexes of dollars, provocation and offense of all detectable lifeforms and the gradual distortion or outright suppression of all known moral principles.
