OK, OK, I was wrong. Top Kill didn't work. Dang it. The engineers are readying the next step. Fortunately, our President Obama was reported to be "enraged" that Top Kill didn't work. For all the criticism he took for being inexperienced, I would say he has learned how to be a really shitty manager pretty quickly. I am sure his rage will help speed things along. Sure works for me when all the folks who work for me are terrified. Dilbert-like, really.

Obama is out of his depth (to borrow John McCain's description) as a leader/manager.
But what concerns me much more with respect to this spill is BP's apparent incompetence. Here's Matt Simmons' assessment.

I think he's just echoing the rest of the world's disgust at BP's focus on dramatic efforts to stop the leak while apparently ignoring the coastal protection and collection aspects. It feels like they're very carefully managing the marketing while ignoring the management of things that will have an actual effect.

What will be the long term effects of this spill?
My guess?
A year from now, we will be hard pressed to find any evidence the oil spill even happened.
However, I will be watching the studies now taking place to see if I'm wrong.
The truly honest answer to the question is: no one knows.
Why can't society just say the obvious? We don't know.
Obama? Good talker, but is he a doer? Doesn't look good now, but maybe he'll learn on the job. I recall candidate Obama was quite critical of Bush's handling of Katrina. President Obama is finding out it is hard to do what needs to be done.
